Button ,Button,
Whose Got the Button?
Sound Familiar?
Or how about Clappers? Twisting and pulling the strings to watch the
buttons spin and hum.
I learned a lot from My mom's button jars. Sitting on the rug in front of
her while she repaired the many shirts and socks our large family had a
steady stream of. With so many boys, there were always missing
buttons, including the ones the old wringer washer claimed.
I learned a lot from playing with those jars of muli-colored
gems. Such as How to count, sort color and size and the kinds of materials
they were made of. Some were bone, metal, glass, seashell, pearl, wood ,
ivory and later plastic.
There were 2hole buttons, 3 hole buttons,4 hole buttons, and shank. I
learned to sew my first button on a dolly dress at my moms feet. Later we
graduated to a large can from Grandma that made sifting thru the buttons
easier and safer. I still have that can.

Because we had a large family most of the time, people gave mom
there hand me downs and throw outs. Nothing went to waste. A rag never saw
the rag bag till all the buttons, zippers and reusable pockets were
removed.
The real fun was when a old coat showed up a couple of times a year. It
was a dandy new bed for the family dog and the usual very large oversized
buttons became our treasure.
We made clappers, wheels for card board boxes for cars. With a pipe
cleaner through the middle and stuck in a decorated baby food jar we had a
wonderful display of window flowers. Buttons worms that slunk, button
dolls and anything else we could dream up.
