Freddy Frog sat on the edge of the pond and looked
first to the left as far as he could see with his big bright yellow eyes. He let out a very
deep sigh and
gazed to the right as far as he could see. He let another long sigh escape
and then turned toward the
tall marsh grass.
It was such a great summer day but yet so plain. Nothing exciting or
special was happening and to Freddy such a great day deserved to have
something special.
His friend Zack hopped up beside him and nudged him.”Hey there Freddy!
What’s up?” he asked.
”Well, now that you ask,” replied Freddy. “Not a single special, exciting,
interesting or fun thing.” “This is just too beautiful a day to be so not
special.”
”Aw, now Freddy, my ole pal.” said Zack. “I know you and I know you have
something in mind. Right?”
”Right you are! “Exclaimed Freddy. “Can I count on you?” Freddy asked.
”Of course you can.” Replied Zack. “What can I do to help?”
”Here’s what you can do.” said Freddy. “Meet me back here at high sun and
bring everyone you can get.”
”Ok, my friend.” said Zack.“You got it.”
At that Zack hopped away one direction and Freddy went the other.
At high sun time Freddy could hear the others coming as he finished his
last chore to make sure everything was ready. He smiled a silly sideway
froggy grin and leapt up on the highest rock at the edge of the pond.
”Welcome! My friends!” Cried Freddy. “Welcome to the first annual longest
day of summer pond picnic!”
Everyone mumbled something like, “wow! How neat! Can’t wait. Look at all
the stuff! “ and “ Let’s do it!”
Freddy had worked very hard. They played lots of games, like javelin toss
using cat tails as the javelin. Blow a stone thru the reed the farthest
and even volley ball using a piece of old fishing net Freddy had found
and strung up and a bobber that had no hook for the ball. They had three
legged races using Jack in the pulpit blossoms for the sack and ring toss
game using gnawed off reed for the stake and empty snail shells as the
rings.
Everyone had a fantastic time until late afternoon when their bellies
began to grumble with hunger. Zack yelled at Freddy. “Hey buddy. If this
is a picnic, where’s the food?” others began to grumble also.
”No Problem .” said Freddy. And he turned and waved his arms toward the
reeds. Two of Freddy’s other friends nodded and hopped into the reeds. The
reeds began to shake and sway and out came flies, mosquitoes, water
skippers and every kind of pond treat they could want.
They zapped and ate until they were all full and sleepy and then settled
on nearby lily pads and sand humps and began to sing .
Freddy sighed another big sigh but this time it
was one of happiness. “What a great day!” he
exclaimed. “Next year all can help plan.”
