Mom's Special Angel
She stood in the hot sun her arms deep in the soapy water. The scent of the lye in
the soap permeated her senses as she scrubbed the well worn dungarees.
Her head jerked up ."Who is calling me?" she thought. She turned slowly
around
hoping to find where the voice was calling from. There was nothing out of the ordinary to
catch her eye.
She shrugged her shoulders and went back to the large tub, this time scrubbing against the
washboard with all her vigor." I have definitely been alone too much lately. "
she muttered half out loud.
"Bessie!"
There. She heard it aging! this time more distinct. She whirled around quickly not taking
her eyes off the distant trees that surrounded the little cabin.
nothing. No one.
"I have got to get more sleep!" she exclaimed. She returned once again to the
almost finished task of laundry, Carefully dumping enough of the wash water into the
metal bucket nearby. She had a habit of saving just enough to scrub the old worn planks of
the cabin floor. Times had been hard and soap scarce.
"Bessie! Get Out!"
This time there was no mistaking it. She heard that! She could feel a strange
sensation creeping up her neck. Her Grammas! That's the voice she was hearing.
"Impossible" she muttered. She's gone. But yet, It was so distinct.
"Bessie! Get Out Now!"
Suddenly she didn't care who or why , she knew in her heart she had to leave that area.
She ran into the cabin , grabbed the soft cloth bag for baby and stuffed what clean
nappies she had into it. She perched her large bonnet haphazardly on her dark curly hair
and then grabbed the few coins they had from the top of the dresser and shoved them deep
into the bag.
It was hot but she grabbed a blanket for the sleeping baby ."Silly" she told
herself ,But took it anyway.
She gently lifted the sleeping baby from his box cradle and scurried out the open cabin
door.
She Only hesitated for a moment to choose which path . One was a long well worn cow path
completely in the open. The other a little shorter led to the closest neighbor but went
through the deep trees. She chose the long open path.
She'd been walking for over an hour she guessed and the baby was awake and fussing. He
seemed much heavier with the hot summer sun bearing down . As she stumbled along the
rutty road, She could see the trees ahead to the farm where her young husband was helping
gather hay.
He was surprised to see her.
She was a very strong woman for being so young. He dropped the pitch fork and ran from the
field to meet her where the trees lined the long drive to the big house.
He wasn't angry ,as she thought he would be. He told her to rest in the tree arbor and he
would use the farmer wagon to take them home.
The cool Breeze cradled both her and baby to sleep. She didn't realize she 'd been asleep
until he was there gently prying the baby from her arms and urging her to come to the
wagon.
As they crested the hill before the cabin he remarked how the dusk filled sky seem
an unusually bright yellow orange.
At the top of the hill they saw why.
The cabin was engulfed in large dancing flames! The spot she had stood that afternoon was
covered with fallen logs from the cabin roof.
No one could convince her otherwise.. Not even when she lay sick and dying. She knew her
grandma had been sent to save her and her baby and she knew grandma would be there soon too.
She was her own special angel
